What is Kinesiology
Kinesiology is a complimentary therapy that started from chiropractic in the 1960’s.
Initial research began in the 1970’s when Dr. George Goodheart, a chiropractor, discovered that muscle testing could be used to gather information from the body.
He discovered that each major muscle had a corresponding organ relationship. His theory grew to incorporate, the Chinese meridian and acupressure system.
A definition from the Australian Kinesiologists Association in 1999 says that, “Kinesiology encompasses holistic health disciplines which use the gentle art of muscle monitoring to access information about a person’s well being”.
Originating in the 1970’s, it combines Western techniques and Eastern wisdom to promote physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.
Kinesiology identifies the elements which inhibit the body’s natural internal energies and accesses the life enhancing potential within the individual.
Kinesiology is used for a wide range of conditions including:
- stress – work, relationships, family, money, life’s sudden challenges
- relationship problems
- learning difficulties
- digestive problems
- nutritional deficiencies
- goal setting
- confidence building
- general well being
- sleep problems
- many other physical or emotional conditions
How it works
“The human nervous system is designed to adapt to change and self-regulate. When we cannot adapt efficiently, the muscles will reflect the stress in the central nervous system. This stress creates specific muscle patterns that kinesiologists can assess using ‘muscle monitoring’ techniques”.
“This ‘muscle monitoring’ may indicate a wide variety of possible causes for imbalances in the person’s overall well being.”
The easiest way to understand this is to think of the signals between the brain and the body as feedback loops. As the brain adapts to the changes in the muscle systems, the muscles – in turn – send signals to alert the brain that the changes have taken place.
Kinesiology tests muscles to see which muscles can hold strong and which ones cannot, when certain stresses are activated in the body. When there is stress in the central nervous system it is reflected in the muscles. Certain muscles correspond with an organ and meridian in the body, and each organ and meridian has associated emotions.
Kinesiologists use this information to see where the imbalances are in your body and your life.
The human body is a network of energy systems. We are all made of energy. Kinesiology is an energetic medicine. It uses philosophies of energy flow from Traditional Chinese Medicine. TCM says, when there are stresses in your life (past or present), energy flow can be blocked which can cause illness and disease. Kinesiology can pinpoint where the imbalances are in your energy system that may be causing the physical or emotional state that you are in. Kinesiology helps stimulate energy flow so the body can heal itself.
What kinds of techniques do kinesiologists use
In a kinesiology session, the aim is to bring the body back into balance.
We use muscle testing to find out where the imbalances are in your body that could be causing the physical or emotional state your are in.
These are discussed with you in the session as we try and pinpoint the areas in your life that also maybe out of balance. Muscle testing is also used to determine what techniques will help bring you back into balance so you feel more focused, empowered, centred and less stressed.
The tools and techniques I use include:
- Holding Acupressure points
- Holding Neuro-lymphatic or Neuro-Vascular reflex points
- Bush, Bach and Desert Flower Essences
- Tuning Forks (sound waves, that correspond with a meridian/organ)
- Essential oils
What is interesting
An interesting point to note here is, that your body and your subconscious mind know exactly what is going on with you. It knows where the stress, illness, imbalance has come from. The great thing about kinesiology is that you can extract all of this information from the body and begin to make changes so the body can heal itself.
How many sessions
Often clients get immediate results and people find there is a huge shift in the first session. It’s recommended 1-3 sessions depending on what you would like to work on. Some areas may need a little more time to work on especially if the client has had the issue for many years. Other clients come once every 6 weeks for a ‘tune up’ when they are feeling out of balance and want to prevent any of life’s stresses creating any more problems! Kinesiology caters for all individual needs.
