Focus on what you DO want – Not on what you don’t want!

Hi There!

Many of us have busy minds. People often tell me about their mental chatter and how they would love to give their heads a rest.

Negative mental chatter and thoughts use up soooooo much energy.

Thoughts like “I shouldn’t have done it that way, I should be more like that person, I’m really not good enough, I don’t belong, it’s too hard, things just don’t turn out for me, I’ll never loose weight, I really can’t have the things I want, I am so stupid, I can’t be accepted being myself, I’ll never find love,  I have to perform or pretend, I wonder what they think of me, I feel guilty for feeling like this, etc, or even worse thoughts than these.

Sometimes negative thoughts turn into more negative thoughts and that can turn into a downward spiral – unless you acknowledge them and turn them around.

It’s time to give your mind a rest and conserve your energy! How good would it be to have extra energy?

Here are a few solutions for giving the mind a break.

1. Turn your thoughts around

You need to treat your mind with kindness and compassion, like you would with a child wanting attention.

Acknowledge the thoughts, don’t dismiss them. When you have a negative thought, immediately notice it and turn it around. Say to yourself, I hear and validate what you are saying and now I choose to think of something that makes me feel good. (Something as simple as, noticing the beautiful blue sky or the feeling of the warm sun on your skin.) Anything that is positive,  that consciously leads you away from the negative thought.

2. Focus on what you do want and not on what you don’t want

Focus on the solution. Daydreaming is the best way. Focus on how you would like the outcome to be. Like attracts like. So negative thoughts attract negative outcomes. Positive focus attracts positive outcomes.

3. Meditation

Meditation is one of the best ways to quieten your mind. I know, I know,  you’re thinking, oh that’s another thing I have to do. Or, I can’t meditate because I don’t have time or I’m not good at it or I can’t sit still. There is so much evidence out there that confirms that meditation is beneficial for you.

Trust me, meditation will be the best thing you could ever do! You could just start with 5 minutes. I started with 5 minutes.  I used to sit in the car, in the garage, before I went inside when I came home from somewhere. (If I went inside there was no way I could have 5 minutes to myself!) I set the timer on my phone for 5 minutes and then extended it by a minute every week.

Here are some great apps for your phone that are free that you could use to get started.

  •  Meditation Timer Pro
  • Take a break
  • Breathe2relax
  • Omvana

Get your mind on your side. Give it a rest and make the decision to start focusing on what you do want. Make meditation a part of your day, like brushing your teeth!

That’s all for now. Have a peaceful week!
